Project Summary

A large proportion of the resistance loss of the steam-pipe with a large diameter originates from the elbow. The bend radius of the standard elbow is rather long and occupies a lot of space. Hence, we use CFD to customize such an elbow usually via adding flow guiding-plates. The resistance of the improved design is lower while the elbow occupies less room, leading to cost-savings.

Project Highlights

Design an elbow with a smaller bend radius

The bend radius of the standard elbow is large. We must design an elbow with a smaller bend radius so that it occupies less room.

If we directly used a 90-degree elbow

If we directly used a 90-degree elbow, the resistance in the system would be large especially on air-coolers. Hence, the resistance of the pipe would increase the air-coolers’ area, resulting in higher project costs.

Extra caution is required when using flow guiding-plates

Extra caution is required when using flow guiding-plates to reduce the local resistance of the elbow because the optimal design of such flow guiding-plates will change along with the changes in physical properties of the fluid.
